One of the things I love most about the magical part of Aberdeenshire around Huntly is that I am always stumbling across amazing ancient sites. After picking up a fbook marketplace item near the station, I thought I’d check out Battle hill, purely for the walk and then of course it turns out it is itself a beautiful monument with a lot of history!
Unsurprisingly, the hill takes its name from an alleged battle. The first thing of interest was the quarry which is charmingly overgrown. I enjoyed my ramble up past it through the trees to the site of recent excavations – since 2011, evidence has been recovered for a hut enclosure, a cairn and a possible hill fort! [There’s a dig in July 2025 to further the investigations but for some reason it costs £55 a day!?]
A lovely almost halloween walk.
